We love love

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION  |

February is the “season of love.” Every year on Feb. 14, people around the world pause to acknowledge the ones they love with Valentine’s Day sentiments – and sometimes even gifts or candy.

This year, on Valentine’s Day, as the national leader of RSM’s Pride employee network group, I’d like to take a few minutes to talk about love. What is love, anyway? It’s typically defined as an intense feeling of affection. We sometimes throw around the word somewhat loosely. “I love tacos.” “I love roller coasters.” “I love rock music.” While I might really, really like all those things, it’s not LOVE in its truest form. Love is inherently compassionate and empathic because love knows that we are all interconnected. This is the true nature of love. Love cares about the dreams and beliefs of others. When I love someone, I understand their goals and help them achieve success. Whether it’s my wife, my child, my parents, my RSM colleagues or friends – I listen to them, learn what’s important to them and support them. I am their ally. I am an advocate for their success. That’s love.

At RSM, our core values – respect, integrity, teamwork, excellence and stewardship – serve as touchstones for what we hold dear and for the way we treat one another, as well as our clients. I appreciate that our firm articulates these values, and that we have such a focus on inclusion and acceptance of one another, regardless of our differences. We embrace those differences because at RSM, we understand that when we bring our diverse thinking to the table, we develop the best solutions for our clients. And we love our clients!

Happy Valentine’s Day. Make your someone special feel loved today! Listen to them and become their advocate.
