Connecting people from all cultures across our firm

Our Multicultural employee network group (ENG) supports individuals with multicultural backgrounds and experiences, educates others on different cultures represented within our firm and around the world, and provides opportunities for our people to learn about colleagues’ experiences that might differ from their own. This fosters a better understanding and appreciation of various cultural contributions, and encourages different perspectives of multicultural individuals to further enhance RSM’s business, as well as our diversity and inclusion objectives. Members actively support the recruitment, development and retention of multicultural individuals and promote cultural diversity within our firm.

This ENG hosts events across RSM, and collaborates with many other ENGs to provide professional development to our people, networking and business development, internal growth opportunities, and recruiting for new college graduates as well as experienced professionals. Members have the opportunity to engage in a conversational language program to develop their skills in a different language, which promotes global business initiatives.

Recognizing the contributions of Jewish Americans

May is Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM)—a month dedicated honoring the Jewish community’s contributions to American history. To formally recognize the Jewish community’s contributions, President George W. Bush proclaimed May as Jewish Heritage Month in 2006. As we continue to acknowledge the generations of Jewish Americans who helped shape American history, it’s also important to understand the journey and where it all began.

Jews first arrived in America 1654. In search of better lifestyles and opportunities, they found refuge in the U.S., a place that allowed them to openly practice their faith without the fear of persecution. The efforts to create a Jewish American Heritage Month were initially considered in 1980, when the first set of laws and proclamations were passed in Congress. By April of 2006, the entire month of May was dedicated to recognizing Jewish contributions and achievements. 

Over the years, Jewish people have been strong advocates for other minorities in America, even participating in the Civil Rights Movement, where they made up a large portion of white Americans who supported voter registrations and rallies. While there are many well-known Jewish Americans, Albert Einstein and Ruth Bader Ginsburg are among the most prominent. Without their contributions to society, we could have easily missed out on important scientific discoveries and the passing of laws related to reproductive rights, discrimination in the workplace, equal pay, women’s rights and gender equality.

As spring arrives each May with its promise of renewal, it provides a great opportunity to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Jewish Americans. At RSM, we celebrate our diverse employee population year-round but are particularly pleased during the month of May to recognize our Jewish American colleagues, friends and clients. In that spirit, the Multicultural employee network group (ENG) has recently joined forces with our Interfaith ENG to increase awareness of various cultural contributions and support members in their faith-related activities through the following initiatives:

  • Encouraging our people to connect, engage and share how they acknowledge the holiday on our internal social networking sites.
  • Launching the Jewish Faith Community, which offers our people a safe space to connect with allies (supporters of the Jewish community) and Jewish colleagues. The community is open to all RSM employees.
  • Hosting a virtual webcast with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Holocaust survivor, Al Munzer. During the event more than 500 of our people came together to discuss the importance of Holocaust history and education.
