IRS issues a series of tips featuring identity theft
TAX ALERT |
The IRS is issuing a series of special tips aimed at providing taxpayers with information to help protect their identity and prevent the filing of fraudulent returns. The Security Awareness Tax Tip series includes tips on protecting one’s computer, phishing schemes, aggressive phone scams, ideas for protecting sensitive documents and electronic tax records, and others. These tips are being provided in the form of emails and YouTube videos. Tips are being released each Monday through January 2016.
The “Taxes. Security. Together.” campaign is a joint effort between the IRS, states and private industry to raise public awareness of routine ploys that may compromise the safety of financial and tax information. Taxpayers may subscribe to receive the tips by email. These security tips can also be found as they are listed, week-by-week, on IRS.gov.
In March 2015, the IRS commissioner convened a Security Summit with public and private tax administration leaders to discuss ways to combat identity theft. These leaders included CEOs of the leading tax preparation software developers, payroll and tax financial product processors, and state tax administrators as well as IRS officials. These individuals divided into working groups specializing in authentication, information sharing, cybersecurity and threat assessment and strategy development to prevent risks and threats. This is the first public awareness campaign to come from the new coalition called the Communication and Taxpayer Awareness Work Group.
