Environmental Sustainability

Grounded by our five core values of respect, integrity, teamwork, excellence and stewardship, RSM is dedicated to managing our business in a way that has a positive impact on the environment. While we have been promoting environmentally sustainable habits across our firm for many years, we are now creating a formalized policy and program to integrate environmental sustainability into our already robust focus on Corporate Social Responsibility.  We are working to formalize our objectives, metrics, key performance indicators and reporting practices in order to ultimately continue to better ourselves, our people, our communities and our planet. In the meantime, here are a few of our existing efforts:

Serving our people and clients remotely

In 2020, our operations footprint was greatly reduced, along with the environmental impact of our employees' daily commute, with the pivot to remote work for the majority of our people due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As we emerge from the pandemic, we are committed to leveraging all we have learned, including continuing to offer remote working options and not returning to our former levels of business travel.

Our video conferencing tools enable our people and our clients to collaborate virtually, which reduces the need for travel and thereby our carbon footprint.

LEED® Certified Buildings

28 of RSM US’s office properties are LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified and internationally recognized by the green building certification system of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Paper reduction

Since 2019, DocuSign has been our enterprise electronic signature solution for our client service professionals. Not only has the use of DocuSign enhanced and modernized our client experience, it has created a full audit trail, a shorter turnaround time for signatures and dramatically reduced the need to print and scan.

Secure Print is a best practice in all of our offices. It places printing requests in que until the sender authorizes the print job at the printer. Not only is this essential when printing confidential jobs, but unwanted print jobs are automatically deleted after 24 hours, which saves on paper and supplies. In addition, all of our printers are set to duplex as a default, and people must choose if they want to print a single-sided document.

Since 2015, Cvent’s CrowdCompass mobile app has helped to eliminate the need for paper agendas at our national meetings, events and conferences. The use of the app has also increased connectivity for all attendees and has provided a consistent form of unified communication.

CaseWare is an audit automation tool utilized to streamline the audit process. Not only does CaseWare lead to more efficient audit efforts, but it allows for use of electronic workpapers and drastically reduces the need to maintain external paper files.

Our tax line of business deploys paperless tax return processing where permitted.  The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the use of electronic filing in many jurisdictions, further accelerating this process.

Our marketing print-on-demand system greatly reduces the need to print marketing materials by enabling marketers and other professionals to order only what they need for a specific event. In addition, RSM and the RSM US Foundation have moved to digital annual reports to reduce our use of paper and to increase the shareability and reach of our reporting.

Employee engagement

RSM supports our local offices in their activities to reduce their environmental impact. For example, Baltimore’s B-more Green team has integrated environmentally sustainable practices into everyday office operations by removing all single-use cups from the office which saves an estimated 70,000+ cups per year. This local program offers inspiration and insights into what changes our employees are willing to make in order to become better stewards of the environment.
