Virtual internship experience: "RSM has heart."
This summer, we transitioned our U.S. internship program into a built-from-scratch 12-day virtual environment that delivered a technology- and people-enabled experience to 822 interns, focused on tangible immersion into our culture through first-choice advisor development opportunities and connectivity with RSM professionals and leaders.
One of our summer interns told us, “RSM has heart. Simple as that.” We feel the same. And this is the feeling we hoped to deliver throughout our 2020 virtual summer internship this past July. Human connection is something many of us are striving to figure out in this new world, and a sense of belonging and connectivity was at the top of our priorities in developing an impactful, innovative and collaborative environment in which our interns could thrive and learn.
Recent College of San Mateo graduate and 2020 RSM summer intern, Suzanne McGhee described her experience at RSM: “I absolutely feel like I am part of a rich and diverse family that is eager to learn about who I am and has courage in sharing who they are. Your attitudes and behavior were genuinely enthusiastic and warm. It truly showed and made all the difference. Thank you for the outstanding message of The Power of Being You really coming through.”
We strived to create an environment throughout the internship program that demonstrated genuine care for our colleagues and interns, and genuine commitment to our communities. We included our interns in dialogue around our position and actions on racial understanding, and actively solicited their ideas on enhancing the impact of RSM’s stewardship across our Birdies Fore Love program, our university giving platforms, and our diversity & inclusion initiatives.
Following their internship, 99.8% of interns surveyed attested to “feeling that RSM is an inclusive environment.” Here at RSM, we work hard at being inclusive across all initiatives and teams. Whether it’s making sure that all of our colleagues can explore great ideas and pursue them through our CEO innovation fund, providing our people the flexibility and resources to pursue their passions, acting on racial understanding among our people, the middle market and our communities, or asking our 2020 summer interns to engage in a Capstone project to share what ideas they have about advancing RSM’s strategic priorities, we acknowledge The Power of Being You. We know every one of the thousands of personalities that make up RSM brings value and unique insights—differences that we celebrate and make us stronger.
Peter Eshbaugh, 2020 RSM summer intern and recent graduate of the University of Alabama, said of the experience, “Given the situation, this internship was better than I could have imagined. The company culture seems so consistent across the firm. Across different positions, different lines of business and even different office locations, everybody genuinely seems to love what they do.” Thanks, Peter—and all of our summer interns. You worked through an unprecedented set of challenges and uncertainty to experience this internship alongside us, and we are so grateful you understand the heart of who we are at RSM. We cannot wait to welcome you as full-time associates soon!
