Culture RSM careers

Caitlin, a risk consulting director, is a mom of two whose supportive team and flexible schedule help her ensure she can be present for her kids, including the additional appointments and care for her special needs son, all while building a successful career.

In her own words:

In 2019, my son was born with a rare chromosome disorder. As most parents with a special needs child can attest, getting the news that your child has a disability is one of the most devastating experiences of your life. For many, myself included, it takes years to accept the daunting task of providing for the medical, social and educational needs of a special child, which leaves little room to think about pursuing a career for yourself. While all working parents are familiar with the challenge of raising their kids while pursuing a career. It can be additionally difficult navigating the professional realm while raising a child who has special needs. On top of needing hands-on care, it’s not uncommon to have six to eight appointments a month.

After I learned of my son’s diagnosis, I contemplated quitting my job. I discussed my options with RSM while on maternity leave, who promised to support me in whatever decision I made. They made it clear they could support my career regardless of how it looked. This conversation was a step in realizing that I could meet the demands of my child and pursue my career. Since I made the decision to stay working, I manage my caretaking and work responsibilities by taking advantage of RSM’s flexibility plans which provide more room in my schedule to ensure I am present for important appointments with my son. Additionally, I communicate challenges with my team so they are aware and can support me in work events when needed. I have always been well supported here at RSM by my team and continue to be grateful to leadership who empowered me to stay.

It is hard for me to express how humbled I am to receive the “Working Mother of the Year” award at RSM, especially knowing how many hard-working mothers, fathers and caregivers we have here, some in a similar situation to me. I am honored that RSM can support what I want: to be successful in my career and also be a very present parent. Thank you to those who nominated me!
