Carolyn, a manager in our finance and accounting outsourcing practice, cares for her father, mother and sister and their various medical needs while working full-time as a consultant.
In her own words:
In February 2020, my father moved in with me from out of state because he needed assistance. At the same time, my sister already had her first bout of cancer and my mother was showing signs of dementia.
In August 2020, both my mother and I sold our homes, and we bought a home with my sister so we could all take care of each other. In the past three years, my father’s condition has worsened, my sister developed a second type of cancer and my mother is now completely non-verbal and not walking.
Working at RSM has allowed me the flexibility to work full time while being able to care of everyone. Going into the office is when I’m able to collaborate closer with my teams and develop relationships. When my sister had a bone marrow transplant last year, my colleagues rallied around me in support. It really helped me appreciate the firm’s culture.
Knowing that I was nominated by my colleagues really humbles me and makes me realize that what I do at work and at home all matter.
