Embracing Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION |
April showers bring May flowers, and May brings Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (formerly Asian Pacific American Heritage Month), which celebrates the culture, traditions and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S.
The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1829, which was constructed largely by Chinese immigrants. President Jimmy Carter signed a joint resolution for the celebration on October 5, 1978, and the rest, as they say, is history.
And part of our history here at RSM is a focus on inclusion. Since our firm was founded in 1926, when our founder Ira B. McGladrey proclaimed, “This company was founded on three enduring values: provide outstanding client service, treat employees well, and do your work honestly and ethically,” we’ve been focused on treating everyone – regardless of their backgrounds – well.
Today, our 11 employee-led employee network groups provide opportunities for volunteerism, professional development, mentorship and networking for everyone in our firm. And our InspirAsian employee network group engages the firm’s Asian professionals in career development opportunities and cultural events to help raise diversity awareness and inclusiveness between leaders and colleagues. Activities to date have included dragon boat races, Ramadan celebrations and recruiting events focused on minority students – just to name a few.
On behalf of our InspirAsian employee network group members and the rest of our people nationwide, we’d like to welcome you to join us in celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
