How do we determine ERP implementation cost?
Determining the cost of an ERP implementation can be complicated. Through our engagements since 2004, we’ve learned that one size does not fit all. We responsibly approach how to work with our customers to build a long-term relationship, we keep the process going after your implementation goes live and we serve as an extension to your organization’s ongoing evolution. Following is an overview of what we consider during the life cycle of an implementation.
Discovery and requirement. RSM starts your project in the discovery and requirement phase with a meeting to understand your business. This includes current systems, project scope, key functionality required, preferred IT environment, budget and future growth plans.
Configuration and user acceptance testing. The project’s most intensive aspect comes during the configuration and user acceptance testing phase. This typically accounts for half to two-thirds of the overall cost. A few simple factors we use when estimating are the number and type of NetSuite modules, the number of system users and your ability to define requirements during the sales process. Be prepared to invest the time to learn NetSuite early on. Instead of waiting to familiarize you with NetSuite, RSM educates our clients as we work with you inside your account beginning in the early stages of your implementation.
Customization, integration and data migration. The next budget variables are customization, integration and data migration. The requirements and cost here vary greatly with the complexity of your processes. NetSuite is designed to be highly configurable with little effort. When customization gaps are identified, we typically present three options: manual workaround (lowest cost or free), fully customized (most expensive), and semicustomized (a middle-ground approach). We aim to find the right balance of cost, timeline and customization to fit your needs.
Training. The final cost consideration is training. RSM’s education-oriented approach moves your stakeholders up the learning curve so that they are knowledgeable and familiar with NetSuite; with those insights, they can help with configuration and solution design, train other users and advocate for the system within your organization. We urge clients to view training is an ongoing process, not a one-time activity.
