June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride (LGBT+) Month (Pride Month), which is celebrated to honor the 1969 Stonewall uprising in Greenwich Village – a tipping point for the Gay Liberation movement in the United States. While the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as “Gay Pride Day,” in major cities across the country, the “day” soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, concerts and other events, which attract millions of participants around the world.
The purpose of Pride Month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) individuals have had on history, locally, nationally and internationally. At RSM, we embrace our diverse employee and client population throughout the year by supporting the Gay Polo League, raising funds for our local LGBT+ community and actions to ensure equality for everyone. For example, earlier this year, we joined nearly 200 other companies in support of legal protections for transgender people. This unwavering focus on inclusion has resulted in RSM recently receiving top marks on the HRC’s Corporate Equality Index, and our being included on the “Best Employers for Diversity” list by Forbes.
But, of course, we ARE recognizing Pride Month, as well. This year, in addition to a number of events that our Pride employee network group members will be coordinating at various offices across the country, a number of our people, friends and family members will celebrate by sailing around the Statue of Liberty. The fun will take place Sun., June 30 in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising on the Sensation brunch cruise, operated by our client, Hornblower Cruises and Events.
