DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION  |

It’s June, and that means that it’s Pride Month!

Each year during June, the world's LGBT communities and their allies come together and celebrate the freedom to be their authentic selves. Throughout the month, various events are held to recognize the influence LGBT+ people have had – and continue to have. June was chosen in recognition of the Stonewall Riots, a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the gay community in response to a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan on June 28, 1969.

In addition to being a month-long celebration, Pride Month also provides an opportunity for supporters to participate in peaceful protests and to raise political awareness of current issues facing the LGBT+ community. Pride Day is celebrated on June 28. The day memorializes when the first Pride march was held in New York City in 1970. However, different communities celebrate Pride Day on different days throughout June. Pre-pandemic, parades were popular during Pride Month, with the New York Pride Parade being one of the world’s largest, having an estimated 500,000 people participating during its 50th anniversary. Other celebrations have included street festivals, educational sessions and other community events, many of which are promoted by local and national media, increasing participation and support. To stay current on this year’s public in-person and virtual Pride Month events across the world, check out this website.

Here at RSM, in recognition of Pride Month, we’re excited to promote a number of events throughout the month to engage our people and the community. Examples of our “Pride ReImagined” activities include:

Pride Ride
For the month of June, RSM’s Pride ENG and our cycling club will sponsor Pride Ride+, a month-long fitness journey encouraging colleagues of all levels within RSM US LLP and RSM Canada to cycle, run, walk, swim – anything to be active. Pride Ride+ will feature a weekly theme with prizes.

Charity Fundraising
Here in the U.S., we’ll have a number of fundraising activities and opportunities, with our capstone charity being Family Equality. Family Equality’s mission is to advance legal and lived equality for LGBTQ families, and for those who wish to form them, through building community, changing hearts and minds, and driving policy change. For more than 25 years, Family Equality has hosted the largest annual gathering of LGBTQ+ families in the world in Provincetown, MA (“Family Week”). While the event once again this year will be virtual, our support will help continue this as well as its overall slate of programming for 2021.

RSM Canada
In Canada, we’re supporting the Welcome Friend Association. The Association educates and promotes awareness in society regarding gender, sexual identities and expressions. They provide outreach and support for people impacted by gender and sexual issues through structured programs, events and resources across Canada.

While injustices remain, we’ve come a long way since the riots of 1969, and Pride Month has become a long-standing tradition that continues to raise awareness, improve the attitudes of society and encourages inclusiveness.

At RSM, we understand that a workplace of inclusiveness results in diverse and innovative thinking that leads to the best possible results for our middle market clients. As the national leader of our firm’s Pride employee network group, I invite you to join our 13,000+ people nationwide and in Canada in embracing inclusion and in celebrating Pride Month!
