DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION |
This time last year, as the national leader of RSM’s Pride employee network group, I penned a brief note for our website about how Valentine’s Day – for many accountants like myself – often brings to mind lease accounting, debits, credits and other aspects of the accounting profession that might not readily come to mind for most. However, since both my wife and I work in the profession, it’s logical for us, as it’s what we in the profession refer to as “busy season,” and it’s something that the two of us have a common understanding of and passion for.
Little did any of us know last February that one short year later we’d be in the midst of a global pandemic that has impacted virtually every aspect of our lives – at work and at home. Wow. What a difference a year makes.
This year, as I sit down to write down a few thoughts about this annual “season of love,” it seemed fitting to think about love in the broadest possible context. Because love is what’s getting us through this global crisis.
I love the way the community has come together to obey stay-at-home orders, practice social distancing and wear masks to help keep one another safe. I love the way teachers and other professionals around the world have developed new and innovative ways of working together remotely to continue meeting their students’ and clients’ needs. I love the creative things families and friends are doing to stay connected while being safe. I love the way those on the front lines – our nurses, doctors, first-responders and others are going above-and-beyond to help those affected by the pandemic and to develop and deliver vaccines that will hopefully put an end to COVID-19 soon. And I love the fact that I work for a firm where I feel like I belong. A firm that embraces diversity and inclusion, and that encourages all of its 13,000+ people in the U.S. and in Canada to bring their authentic selves to work every day. (Check out this recent “Inclusion Starts with I” video featuring a conversation with our managing partner and CEO and several of our Pride employee network group members for a candid conversation on some of the issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community.)
So, yes, even during a global pandemic, there is so much to love. This Valentine’s Day looks much different than any other we’ve experienced in our lifetimes, but I feel the love around me. I hope you do too.
