Celebrating Our Military and Veterans

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION  |

It’s May, and not only does that bring May flowers, it also brings National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM).

NMAM, which is celebrated every May, honors current and former members of the U.S. armed forces, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives in pursuit of freedom. The month is characterized by a number of national observances highlighting the contributions of those who are serving and those who have served, including Loyalty Day (May 1) and Public Service Recognition Week (May 2 – 8). Additional observances include Military Spouse Appreciation Day (May 7), Armed Forces Day (May 15) and Memorial Day (May 31). May is also the Month of the Military Caregiver, which honors more than five million caregivers in the U.S, and pays tribute to those who care for more than two million veterans.

But how did all of this get started? In 1999, the late Senator John McCain introduced formal legislation to designate May as National Military Appreciation Month. Both the House and Senate adopted resolutions calling for Americans to recognize and honor U.S. service members during NMAM – not only to remind Americans of the sacrifices made by those who serve(d), but to encourage the military to support local engagements designed to draw public attention and illustrate public support.

Here at RSM, we’re proud to support our military and veterans year-round, especially during May in celebration of NMAM, and we encourage you to do the same. Just a few examples of things you can do to show your appreciation to our armed forces include:

  • Displaying the American flag at your home or business
  • Showing your support on social media by using #MilitaryAppreciationMonth
  • Sharing, liking, commenting on, posting and reposting social media messages spotlighting NMAM event and observances
  • Sending a care package to a soldier
  • Thanking anyone you might see in uniform
  • Donating to a veteran or military nonprofit

On behalf of RSM’s VALOR employee network group, I encourage you to show your support of our military and veterans throughout National Military Appreciation Month.
