On May 28, 2020, the IRS issued a news release announcing the addition of Form 1040X to the list of forms available for electronic filing beginning this summer. Making Form 1040X an electronically filed form has been an IRS goal for a number of years since nearly three million Forms 1040X are filed each year. Electronic filing will only be available for tax year 2019 and taxpayers still have the option to submit the form by mail.

Submitting the Form 1040X electronically will allow the IRS to receive returns faster and will reduce processing errors associated with the manual input once received. This will also permit the IRS to answer questions about amended returns more accurately and timely.

While not addressed in the announcement, we expect electronic filing of Form 1040X to be available in future years.
