Payroll is one of the most important functions within any organization, contributing directly to employee satisfaction, retention, continuity and productivity. However, evolving regulatory demands complicate payroll processes, creating potential legal and financial risks.

“Things are changing so quickly, and just keeping up with all of the new updates, laws and regulations is a challenge,” says Ariana Burgess, Dayforce supervisor at RSM US LLP.

With so much at stake, companies need to make sure they do whatever is possible to get payroll right. With that in mind, Tredegar Corporation, a plastic films and aluminum extrusions manufacturer, has relied on RSM to support internal payroll staff and successfully leverage payroll technology for several years. The long-standing relationship has given Tredegar leadership peace of mind and confidence in their critical payroll processes. 

The role of RSM in Tredegar's payroll transformation

As technology has advanced, it has become a critical element of any payroll strategy. RSM initially began working with Tredegar in 1999 to implement a human resources and workforce management technology solution. With Tredegar’s dedication to innovation and HR process optimization, the company recently decided to transition to the Dayforce human capital management (HCM) system.

While payroll is a need for every company, it’s certainly not a one-size-fits-all process, as different company structures may create more complexity and result in unique needs. For example, Tredegar has two different lines of business, with both salaried and hourly employees, as well as multiple plants that operate on different timekeeping systems, all of which needed to be brought within the Dayforce system. With their depth of experience, the Dayforce-certified RSM team effectively managed those technical requirements so that the payroll data is collected and presented consistently and accurately. 

“With RSM, I have worked with a number of clients, all with different setups, all with different industries and different teams,” says Burgess. “Really seeing how different teams handle the same issue has given me a broad perspective of different ideas on how to tackle common challenges that everyday [payroll professionals] face.”

Optimizing Dayforce for enhanced payroll efficiency

With the implementation of Dayforce, Tredegar has moved to a self-service strategy to give employees more access to and control over their payroll and benefits data. It’s another significant initiative Tredegar has completed to improve the employee experience, and RSM’s experience and Dayforce’s deep functionality have eased the transition, creating efficient and compliant processes.

With support from RSM, Tredegar has optimized their payroll and benefits approach, proactively adapting processes and leveraging technology to increase efficiency and insight. The high level of trust built between the two companies has created an environment where payroll and benefits move smoothly, employee satisfaction remains high, and Tredegar has the bandwidth to continue developing and establishing innovative strategies.

“RSM is amazing and easy to work with,” says Niki Henry, benefits administrator at Tredegar. “Within the HR, benefits and payroll field, I'm certain there are many people who can say the responsiveness has to be top-tier because a lot of our stuff is on deadline. Our RSM team has been able to turn things around for us so quickly, and we greatly appreciate them for all that they do.”
