Invest in your RSM network: The grass is greener where you water it

My career with RSM US LLP (RSM) started in the Fort Lauderdale office in South Florida as a graduate of Florida State University. (Go Noles!) When I left the firm, I did so to pursue a unique opportunity. A friend was doing something completely different in financial advisory (specifically corporate restructuring—under investment banking), and he invited me to join him. Corporate restructuring was something completely new and interesting to me and a unique opportunity for growth, so I felt I needed to give it a shot. Best case, I liked it—great; in the worst case, I could always come back to public accounting (and hopefully RSM)!

After two years of full-time travel and living out of a suitcase, I felt I needed structure back in my life. I immediately dove into my network. I started reaching out to former colleagues at RSM with whom I had relationships and who were people I could lean on, ask questions and seek guidance. After a couple of great conversations, I expressed to RSM that I'd be interested in rejoining the team, and after some additional discussions, I was welcomed back with open arms. Engaging with your network is absolutely critical at every phase of your career, period. Connecting with my RSM network was a huge factor in my return.

If you're an RSM alum looking to come back to RSM, do it! My advice is to be thoughtful and honest about why you left. If you have concerns, reach out to your network and ask questions. Get more involved in the alum network and dig into what RSM is today. I will say that going to a different place opened my eyes to what the truths of work are—and aren’t. The grass isn't always greener on the other side; it’s greener where you water it.
