About Kate

Kate Abdoo is a Washington National Tax principal at RSM US LLP. She specializes in accounting methods and periods, advising on federal tax issues, including revenue recognition, BEAT, GILTI and cost recovery. Her industry experience includes leading accounting methods planning at a national energy company and advising large multinational clients at a Big Four firm. She joined RSM in 2022.


Experience

Kate focuses on accounting methods and periods. She advises clients on a variety of federal tax issues including revenue recognition, leasing, capitalization and cost recovery, foreign corporation accounting methods issues, planning around BEAT and GILTI exposure, and accounting periods.

Prior to joining RSM in 2022, Kate was with the IRS office of chief counsel where she served as special counsel (income tax and accounting). In this role, Kate oversaw the drafting of various items of IRS guidance and regulations, including 2020 final regulations under the meals and entertainment rules of section 274. Before joining the chief counsel office, Kate was a tax director with a Big Four national tax office, where she advised large, multinational clients on federal tax planning and compliance issues.

Kate’s industry experience includes working as in-house counsel for a large, national energy company where she led accounting methods planning and compliance initiatives for all their business operations and worked closely with the international tax team to identify and implement planning techniques arising out of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Kate is a former adjunct professor with Georgetown University Law Center and is an active participant in the ABA tax section, currently serving as vice chair of the tax section’s tax accounting committee.

Kate’s extensive experience in private practice, the IRS of office chief counsel and industry allows her to bring a superior level of technical knowledge and practical experience to RSM clients.
