RSM US LLP (“RSM”) – the nation’s leading provider of audit, tax and consulting services focused on the middle market – is pleased to announce that RSM has entered into a partnership with the US office of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (the Award). The Award is the world’s largest youth achievement award, which equips young people for life.
The goal of the Award is to inspire and empower young Americans 14-24 years of age, from all background and communities, to challenge themselves to make positive changes in their lives and their communities. Since 1956, millions of young people have taken part in the Award in more than 130 countries and territories.
Through its partnership with The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award USA, RSM has trained a number of professionals from the firm’s Bay Area, New York and Chicago offices to serve as virtual mentors for youth involved in the Award. This will be the first time the Award program has engaged virtual mentors. RSM plans to expand its involvement as virtual mentors over time to align with the growth of Award in the United States.
“At RSM, we have a long history of giving back to the communities where our employees live and work,” said Doug Opheim, chief financial officer and chairman of the RSM US Foundation. “It’s that spirit of stewardship that, in large part, drove our interest in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award USA program. We’re also continuously focused on innovation so we can ensure that we always provide our middle market clients with leading edge audit, tax and consulting services, so when we learned we’d have an opportunity to employ that sense of innovation to enhance our communities through our support of the Award, we jumped at the opportunity.”
“We have been passionate supporters of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in the UK for twelve years and have witnessed first-hand the work it does as the world’s leading youth engagement charity,” said David Gilliam with RSM UK Group LLP. “It’s fantastic to see RSM US, whose values align with our own, support the Award in the U.S.”
The work being done through the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award USA aligns closely with the RSM US Foundation’s dedication to building tomorrow’s middle market leaders by (1) enhancing educational outcomes through programs focused on building career paths for individuals to become entrepreneurs or middle market business leaders, and/or (2) supporting organizations committed to providing more stable environments for youth in the areas of hunger, housing and health, which will help them excel in education.
Through the foundation, RSM supports those volunteering with the Award program by matching their volunteer time with financial support through the foundation’s Dollars for Doers program.
Lily Rogers, a risk advisory consulting manager in RSM’s San Jose office, is one of the firm’s first leaders to be engaged in the Award program, which includes four areas of focus for participants: physical recreation, service (volunteerism), skills building and an adventurous journey. “As a volunteer in this program, my job is to get to know the participants and understand what they’re trying to achieve so I can effectively mentor them and help them set and achieve meaningful goals,” said Rogers. “It’s very rewarding to see these young people achieve success.”
“RSM volunteers are a key component of allowing young people across the United States to participate in the Award,” said Elizabeth Higgins-Beard, CEO of the Award USA. “Pairing trained volunteers who can connect with youth participants through electronic means—phone calls, texts, video conferencing and email—in our Virtual Award Program (VAP) is a global pilot unique to the US, and one that is showing outstanding results. Although each RSM volunteer is based in a metropolitan area, young people in cities, suburbs and rural areas are able to connect with RSM’s mentoring Award Leaders via the VAP. While challenging, the Award allows young people to determine what they are passionate about, regardless of their backgrounds, culture or access to resources. Partnerships with organizations like RSM are key to providing the opportunity for young people to develop their life skills.”
