Venture capital trends from 2019 and looking ahead to 2020

Fundraising and dealmaking projected to stay robust

INSIGHT ARTICLE  |

Venture capital deals aggregated approximately $136.5 billion in 2019 to follow the record-breaking total of $140.2 billion in 2018. Deal volumes increased to 10,777, compared to 10,542 in 2018, to reach the highest count since 2016. Given these modest changes relative to last year, 2019 turned out to be a consolidation of what one might call the new normal in the VC industry. Looking back before 2018, the soaring levels set in 2018 and 2019 relative to historical numbers become more apparent. 2019 and 2018 stand alone above $100 billion and both outpace the highest yearly total set before 2018 by more than $49 billion.

With data from PitchBook and the National Venture Capital Association, Hitesh Kothari, assurance partner, and Kennedy Chinyamutangira, senior analyst, examine the U.S. venture capital activity in 2019. This report offers an array of insights into the current U.S. VC landscape, including deal flow analysis, exit activity and valuation trends, along with predictions for 2020.
