RSM's Almonte Receives AICPA's Gold Medal for Distinguished Service

Award is highest AICPA honor

RSM US LLP (“RSM”) – the nation’s leading provider of audit, tax and consulting services focused on the middle market – is pleased to announce that Ernie Almonte, a partner in the firm’s Boston office and former chair of the American Institute of CPA’s (AICPA’s) board of directors, is the recipient of the AICPA’s 2016 Gold Medal Award for Distinguished Service.

The Gold Medal is the highest honor awarded by the AICPA. Since 1944, it has been presented to CPAs whose influence on the accounting profession is particularly notable. Kathy Johnson, CPA, a member of the awards committee presented Almonte with the award recently at the fall meeting of the AICPA governing Council.

“Over the course of his 35 year career, Ernie’s work on behalf of the profession and his community has exemplified what it means to go above and beyond. Through it all, he’s always stayed true to his core values of integrity, reliability, independence and accountability,” said Johnson. “Ernie has always believed in investing in the future. His foresight in founding the Leadership Academy ensured that the CPA leaders of tomorrow have the skills they need for the profession to continue to thrive. And his commitment to raising awareness of the importance of financial literacy has helped many Americans toward a brighter financial future.”

“At RSM, we encourage employees to pursue both their professional and their personal dreams,” said Tom Ferreira, regional managing partner, Northeast Region, for RSM US LLP. “Since stewardship – giving back or leaving things better than we find them – is one of our key values, it’s not surprising that Ernie dedicates much of his time to enhancing the accounting profession. We are proud of everything Ernie does for our profession, for our people and for our clients.”

Before joining RSM, Almonte served as the Rhode Island Auditor General, where he was responsible for auditing the $7 billion State Annual Financial Report, $3 billion Federal Single Audit, Municipal Oversight, and Performance and Fraud Audits. He was previously appointed by the Secretary of Defense as Chairman of the Department of Defense Audit Committee. He also served on the Government Auditing Standards Committee, where he was appointed by the Comptroller General of the U.S.

Almonte has a lengthy history of serving as a volunteer leader with the AICPA. From 2009-2010, he served as chair of the AICPA’s Board of Directors. He has previously chaired the Institute’s Finance, Audit, Nominations and Government Performance and Accountability committees. Recently, he served as chair of the AICPA’s National Financial Literacy Commission from 2013-2015, promoting better financial decision making among all Americans through his frequent media and public speaking appearances.

Almonte has served as president of the National State Auditors Association and the Rhode Island Society of CPAs (RISCPA). He has worked as chairman of the Rhode Island Employer Support of Guard and Reserve, and chairman of the Board of Directors at Virtual DBS.

He has been active in his community, volunteering his time with Operation Stand Down Rhode Island, Boy Scouts of America, Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, Elizabeth Buffam Chace House – a shelter for battered women and abused children – and the Salvation Army.

Almonte has been recognized for his contribution as a recipient of the Department of the Army Outstanding Civilian Service Medal and the RISPCA’s Centennial Outstanding CPA in Government. Accounting Today has named Almonte to their ‘Top 100 Most Influential People in the Accounting Profession’ list multiple times.

Almonte earned a B.S. in Business Administration, Master of Science in Taxation, and Honorary Doctor of Business Administration from Bryant University. He graduated from the Senior Executives in State and Local Government and Innovations in Governance program at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government.

A list of previous recipients can be found on the AICPA’s Gold Medal awards page.
