Managing the maze of employee leave

Managing routine requests for leave is challenging enough. However, when employees require extended or frequent time off for their own illness or injury, or illness of a family member, the complexity increases. These situations may now trigger the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or workers’ compensation, requiring a clear understanding of guidelines and necessary processes.

Decisions made absolutely on written policy can be as detrimental as those based solely on compassion. During this webcast, we explore how leave requests can trigger multiple laws and require thoughtful analysis in considering extensions of leave or terminations. Specific topics of discussion include:

  • FMLA challenges
  • Leave accommodations under ADA
  • Workers’ compensation and FMLA
  • Workers’ compensation
  • How voluntary and mandated leave obligations can coincide
  • Strategies to avoid abuse of leave or the establishment of bad policy by precedent
