Breaking the silence: How RSM and Active Minds are changing mental health conversations

Jack Holland, RSM consulting supervisor in the Washington Metro market, shares his involvement with Active Minds, a nonprofit dedicated to saving lives, and why destigmatizing mental health is close to his heart.

Volunteering has always been close to my heart. My involvement with Active Minds began during my time at Virginia Tech. I had lost good friends to mental health struggles, and their memory fueled my commitment. I wanted to honor them by destigmatizing mental health and promoting open dialogue.

When I joined RSM, I was proud to discover that the RSM US Foundation supports Active Minds nationally. I have since been able to participate in volunteer opportunities that resonate with me on a deeply personal level by supporting mental health and wellbeing and promoting opportunities in my local office.

Our Washington metro team recently came together to create stress-less kits for local students. These kits were carefully packed with activities, exercises, best practices, local resources and even some comforting snacks. The goal was simple: to provide support and alleviate stress for those who needed it most.

The second part of our local volunteer event was equally powerful. We participated in the Send Silence Packing campaign that visited more than 60 schools and communities in the U.S. As an interactive display, the campaign aims to end the silence surrounding mental illness by providing access to resources and raising awareness. The first stop was the University of Maryland, where 35 of my colleagues and I shared this impactful experience with other members of Active Minds and students. We carried backpacks filled with stories from individuals personally touched by mental illness—stories of hope, healing and loss.

As I interacted with the student body, I witnessed something remarkable. Students actively engaged in conversations about mental health. They shared their own experiences, listened to others and embraced vulnerability. It was a testament to the importance of breaking down the stigma and fostering understanding.

I’m thrilled to see the growing connection between the RSM US Foundation and Active Minds. RSM’s support for our people’s passions—whether through Dollars for Doers, the Community Impact Fund or other avenues—has been truly fulfilling. Together, we’re making a difference—one conversation, one kit and one heartfelt message at a time.
