A journey from public accounting to industry leadership

After graduating from the University of Maryland, my career started with American Express Tax and Business Services, which RSM US LLP later acquired. Over a decade at RSM, I obtained my CPA designation and an MBA from Georgetown University, where I studied corporate finance. I climbed the ranks to become a director, focusing primarily on assurance services. Reflecting on that time, I see how pivotal those years were for my professional growth and skill development. Public accounting provided me with a robust foundation for managing stakeholder expectations and developing management skills.

While my journey at RSM was marked by a commitment to learning and growth, after 10 years, a major life transition prompted a new chapter, and I relocated to Boston with my family. Starting fresh in a new market came with challenges, especially in a field where relationships drive business development. Recognizing this, I shifted from public accounting to industry, taking on a technical accounting role in a private equity portfolio company in the software/tech sector and, subsequently, a controllership role with Ironwood Pharmaceuticals.

This transition was not without challenges, but the skills I honed at RSM served me well. Juggling multiple leaders and clients in public accounting taught me how to prioritize and communicate effectively. While I missed the camaraderie and dynamic environment of a public accounting firm, my new role offered the opportunity to drive change and make a tangible impact—something I found deeply fulfilling.

I advise new accountants to stay with a public accounting firm for as long as possible, ideally until reaching the manager level. That experience opens so many doors. I also recognize how the accounting profession has evolved, especially with an increased focus on work-life balance. I encourage young professionals to invest in their careers while they can.

Outside of work, I cherish my time with my young family. Whether shuttling the kids to activities or enjoying quality time together, family remains my top priority. Living near Fenway Park has its perks, too—I try to catch a game there whenever possible. Even with a busy schedule, I remain committed to my professional development, keeping my CPA license active by fitting in self-study when I can.

Looking back on my time at RSM, I am deeply grateful for the supportive culture and the quality of the people I worked with. RSM laid a strong foundation for my career, and the relationships I built there continue to have a positive impact, both personally and professionally. Today, I stay connected to the firm, leveraging RSM’s extensive knowledge of internal audit services.
