Birdies Fore Love impact: The Valerie Fund
Since the Birdies Fore Love program started nine years ago, RSM has supported hundreds of charities in local communities around the United States. In 2017 alone the program raised over $2 million for 70 charities. In a series of articles, we’ll learn more about a few of these deserving charitable organizations to better understand the impact Birdies Fore Love has on the communities where we live and work.
The Valerie Fund is a non-profit organization based in the New York/New Jersey area that supports children with cancer and blood disorders. Our New York Metro office has supported The Valerie Fund for the last two years, significantly impacting the organization with a contribution of over $154,000 during that time.
According to Barry Kirschner, The Valerie Fund’s executive director, support received through BirdieFore Love has helped the organization improve the range of care provided throughout its network of centers and hands-on and financial support for Camp Happy Times. A free, weeklong overnight summer camp operated by the Valerie Fund, the camp is for children who are battling or have beaten cancer. It provides a fun, therapeutic environment where campers can build self-esteem, friendship and confidence. “These funds have allowed us to approve new psychosocial positions, like a nutritionist who ensures that the children arrive for the treatment in the best possible mental and physical condition to beat their diseases,” he said. “She works with the psychosocial team to provide the best possible care for the entire family.”
In addition to Birdies Fore Love support, the New York Metro office also partnered with The Valerie Fund for RSM’s 2017 Volunteer Day. Our employees put on their best camp attire and joined The Valerie Fund staff to prepare for Camp Happy Times.
“RSM’s Birdies Fore Love program support has helped us enhance and expand on the psychosocial programs within our centers that impact over 6,000 children and their families each year,” said Barry. “In just the past two years, we have provided more support for long term follow-up, integrative medicine, psychology and educational programs within our centers. This would not have taken place without programs like this. Birdies Fore Love is crucial to the future success of organizations like The Valerie Fund.”
