Experience

As national leader of RSM’s business tax practice, Matt is focused on developing and executing the firm’s strategy to best serve the changing needs of the middle market. Since joining RSM in 1991, Matt has been passionate about the firm being preeminent in the industry and a leader in technology. His extensive career in public accounting provides him a deep understanding of how technology can make the daily lives of the firm’s talent and clients better and more efficient.

Matt’s work focuses on digital transformation of the client and employee experience in order for RSM to deliver the highest level of service. He strategizes with colleagues to innovate and automate to give the firm’s tax professionals the right tools to serve clients the way they want to be served. Through automation, Matt helps his team work more efficiently to help RSM clients win.

COVID-19 arrived during Matt’s 2019−2020 term as chair of the RSM board of directors. While managing the pivot to virtual work, he appointed newer board members to committee chair roles to elevate their level of responsibility and engagement. His board experience includes serving as chair of the partner matters, managing partner, and finance and M&A committees.

Prior to his role as national business tax leader, Matt led the firm’s credits, incentives and methods national practice. His public accounting experience encompasses private equity and owner-managed businesses, as well as corporations and partnerships. His industry involvement includes consumer products, software, gaming and craft brewing. He has been a featured speaker at several business association meetings and seminars, including the Institute of Management Accountants and the CFO Roundtable.

The father of three, Matt attributes much of his career success to the ongoing support of his wife and children. An empathetic leader, he encourages his team to think about what’s best for their families to achieve a healthy work-life balance. He contributes to conversations on work and family as part of the firm’s Family First employee network group. Outside the firm, Matt has been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters and Young Life, two organizations whose core values align with his own.

When he’s not strategizing on RSM technology innovations, Matt can be found in his home batting cage pitching to one of his kids or smoking meats on his wood pellet smoker.
