As RSM’s Tax Digital Strategy Leader, Matt leads the evolution of the firm’s tax technology ecosystem, including the development and adoption of scalable digital solutions that enhance the overall client and RSM staff experience across the globe. He brings more than 30 years of experience as a trusted advisor to clients providing tax compliance and consulting services. His focus is on delivering next-generation digital technologies that help solve real tax and business challenges.
Since joining RSM in 1991, Matt has been passionate about the firm being preeminent in the industry and a leader in technology. Throughout his career, he has consistently championed the use of digital tools to improve quality, speed, and collaboration for both clients and RSM professionals. His extensive career in public accounting provides him with a deep understanding of how technology can make the daily lives of the firm’s talent and clients better and more efficient.
As the previous National Business Tax Leader, Matt focused on developing and executing the firm’s strategy to best serve the changing needs of the middle market. He designed and launched foundational tax digital initiatives to support RSM’s digital transformation, including proprietary application development, data and process automation, and end-to-end technical support. This laid the groundwork for RSM’s integrated myRSM tax technology ecosystem, which brings together platforms, data, and digital capabilities to drive automation. He also created new resource management strategies to build out and launch the firm’s India talent integration in 2021, and, in support of RSM’s firm strategy, developed the plan to realign talent from verticals to collaborative capabilities and specialties, which was rolled out firmwide in 2023.
Today, Matt’s work continues to center on transforming the client and employee experience through intentional use of technology. He strategizes across teams to innovate and automate, giving the firm’s tax professionals the right tools to serve clients the way they want to be served. Through enhanced digital strategy, Matt ensures innovation is embedded into how the firm works, positioning RSM at the forefront of tax technology that delivers measurable value to the middle market.
COVID-19 arrived during Matt’s 2019–2020 term as chair of the RSM board of directors. While managing the pivot to virtual work, he appointed newer board members to committee chair roles to elevate their level of responsibility and engagement. His board experience includes serving as chair of the partner matters, managing partner, and finance and M&A committees.
Prior to his role as national business tax leader, Matt led the firm’s credits, incentives and methods national practice. His public accounting experience encompasses private equity and owner-managed businesses, as well as corporations and partnerships. His industry involvement includes consumer products, software, gaming and craft brewing. He has been a featured speaker at several business association meetings and seminars, including the Institute of Management Accountants and the CFO Roundtable.
The father of three, Matt attributes much of his career success to the ongoing support of his wife and children. An empathetic leader, he encourages his team to think about what’s best for their families to achieve a healthy work-life balance. He contributes to conversations on work and family as part of the firm’s Family First employee network group. Outside the firm, Matt has been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters and Young Life, two organizations whose core values align with his own.
When he’s not focused on RSM’s technology innovations, Matt enjoys spending time with his family, making the most of weekends around the Carolinas, and perfecting his craft on his wood pellet smoker.
