Eric Carroll

Partner, Assurance, and Tri-State Leader for Employee Benefit Plan Audit Practice

About Eric

Eric Carroll is responsible for overseeing the employee benefit plan audit practice for RSM US LLP in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. He has extensive technical knowledge with more than 15 years of experience auditing employee benefit plans.

Experience

Eric leads RSM's employee benefit plan practice for the tri-state area, auditing plans with billions of dollars in assets and thousands of participants. His team's experience includes single-employer and multiemployer plans as well as various funding arrangements, such as defined benefit and defined contribution pension plans—401(k), 403(b), money purchase, profit sharing and employee stock ownership plans—along with health and welfare plans. Eric enjoys the challenge of helping employee benefit plan audit clients efficiently and effectively comply with the complex laws and regulations governing retirement plans.

Before coming to RSM, Eric worked at a Big Four firm and spent time at a major global bank where he focused on employee benefit plans. His interest in retirement plans comes from a desire to protect pension assets for future generations—a desire that arose from his own family situation, as Carroll’s dad was a union worker for a large telecommunications company and his mom lives off the survivor benefits of his pension. Eric is gratified to serve as a strong independent auditor for clients to help them identify potential regulatory compliance issues early in the audit process and avoid costly plan corrections later.

Outside of the firm, Eric is a frequent speaker at conferences and industry events on topics related to employee benefit plans. He believes strongly in RSM’s value of stewardship and volunteers his time in training others in the profession and improving audit quality. Eric serves as chair of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants auditing task force for multiemployer benefit plans, where he is heavily involved in the task force's objective of authoring a new AICPA employee benefit plan guidebook chapter on accounting and auditing of multiemployer benefit plans.

As part of RSM's culture, diversity and inclusion efforts, Eric serves as the local office executive sponsor of Generations, the firm's employee networking group that connects employees across all experience levels and lines of business. He hosts mentor breakfasts and discussions to bring people of different generations together for greater understanding.

A father of two, Eric makes it known to his team that family comes first for everyone. He believes in work-life balance and supporting his teammates to ensure they have the time and resources to be successful in their work and home life.
