Elizabeth Sponsel is a tax partner and national leader of the tax technology consulting practice at RSM US LLP. She has spent her entire career at the intersection of tax and tax technology, helping clients make their work and lives easier by demystifying and optimizing tax technology.
In 2020, Elizabeth launched RSM’s tax technology consulting practice designed to transform the client experience with tax technology. As the national leader of this practice, Elizabeth leverages her extensive experience with tax technology selection and optimization, tax department workflow and process improvement, and tax data automation with low code/no-code solutions and various programming languages to deliver distinct business results for our largest corporate clients and portfolio companies. She guides clients through their transformation journeys, applying evolving technologies to optimize the corporate tax function and elevate the tax function as a strategic business partner to the organization. Her specialties include ERP system integration, robotics process automation, custom business logic development, and collaboration portal development.
Elizabeth’s passion for technology began during her early career in corporate tax and was ignited by the desire to eliminate mundane tasks and “never do the same thing twice.” Her aim now is to help her clients achieve the same through an integrated data, process, and systems strategy that enables them to achieve the art of the possible.
Her 30 years of combined experience as a corporate tax professional and self-taught information technology specialist provides her with a unique lens to solving the most complex client issues. She uses a targeted, creative approach—rather than offering an off-the-shelf solution—to make sure her clients are reaping benefits, having fun, and deriving value from technological enhancements. Elizabeth has a deep understanding of the middle market and is skilled at right-sizing solutions for a winning go-to-market strategy. Her team provides technological solutions as well as strategic guidance to support clients along their technology adoption journey.
Prior to building the national tax technology consulting practice, Elizabeth stood up the firm’s business tax co-sourcing practice, formerly referred to as RSM’s corporate tax office specialty practice. Before joining RSM, Elizabeth co-founded her own software development company to provide innovative business intelligence solutions to corporate tax organizations, which she successfully led for 11 years. She was also a tax partner with a Big Five accounting firm.
Elizabeth is supportive of RSM’s STAR employee network group, which advocates for women in the workplace with a focus on stewardship, teamwork, advancement, and retention opportunities. As a working mother of two, she is passionate about supporting females in tax and in technology who are looking to blend motherhood with their professional careers.
