American Hotel Register Company: From towels to televisions

A middle market company built around the U.S. travel industry


American Hotel Register Company dates back to the Civil War, when its founder began selling hotel guest register books in the then nascent lodging industry. Building its business alongside the expansion of railroads and highways that broadened travel in the United States, the company is now a modern global leader in the worldwide hospitality supplier industry.

The privately held, Vernon Hills, Illinois-based company has been led by members of the Leahy family since the turn of the 20th century, when Thomas F. Leahy took over the business. Its management team now includes fourth generation members of the family.

With customers in more than 170 countries, the company sells towels, robes, shampoo, sundries, furniture, janitorial products and a host of other supplies to world-renowned brands that range from Ritz Carlton and Hyatt to Holiday Inn.

American Hotel also sells to independent inns, the burgeoning home rental business, and the government, health care, education and funerary industries. Recent acquisitions in Asia have expanded the company’s global scope, and it now has offices in the Netherlands, Dubai, China, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan and Australia.

The company prides itself on civic involvement and has a long history of donating products, services, time and resources—including through the efforts of its employees—to charitable causes.
