Thank a veteran today

ARTICLE  |

Hello Spring! The warmer weather, blooming flowers, longer days and thoughts of summer vacation are here. The month of May is a wonderful time to appreciate the beauty that is growing before our very eyes. In my opinion, there is no better month to emphasize appreciation than May, which happens to be Military Appreciation Month. It’s a time for us to recognize the contributions and sacrifices that members of the military make for our country, and the important role of military family members who support those who serve. Military Appreciation Days in May include:

  • May 1, 2019 - Loyalty Day
  • May 1, 2019 - Silver Star Service Banner Day
  • May 8, 2019 - VE (Victory in Europe) Day
  • May 10, 2019 - Military Spouse Appreciation Day
  • May 13, 2019 - Children of Fallen Patriots Day
  • May 18, 2019 - Armed Forces Day
  • May 27, 2019 - Memorial Day (Decoration Day)

As the national leader of the RSM Stars & Stripes employee network group (ENG), I couldn’t be more thankful for RSM’s support for our veterans and their family members and their active support of veterans in the communities we serve. The RSM support goes beyond veterans and families, though. It’ goes directly to our active military reserve employees and their families. A great example of the impact of this support can be seen in our Chicago office with Ethan Gregerson, an audit supervisor and current U.S. Army Officer (reservist). Read what Ethan has to say about his experience:

“As a current serving officer in the Army Reserve, I have a very unique public accounting experience. Last April, I headed out to annual training with my Army reserve unit, where I was placed in charge of managing the receipt, storing and shipping of food and other logistical support for 4,500 Soldiers. While this wasn’t a break from my busy work schedule for me personally, it left a bit of a ‘hole’ in my work group for scheduling purposes. When I told our leader of my orders for annual training, however, I received complete support and gratitude for my service. This has been a common theme throughout my 4+ years working concurrently for the U.S. Army and with RSM. RSM and its people have been very flexible with my training, which hasn’t just been one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer. I’ve really appreciated the support from all the partners and employees at the firm, and it hasn’t been limited to my military service. RSM has helped and developed me to become the professional that I am today. I appreciate the time and resources RSM puts into its people and development. RSM has helped me find balance and support.” – Ethan Gregerson, audit supervisor and U.S. Army Officer

At RSM, our Stars & Stripes ENG supports veterans and their family members every day throughout the year by providing a variety of resources for the development of these individuals in both their RSM and their military aspirations. Our Stars & Stripes members keep one another apprised of news and opportunities for veterans, and support our people still serving in the military when they are deployed. We also provide holiday meals for veterans, sponsor various veteran leadership events and raise funds to support military members and their families.

On behalf of our more than 10,000 RSM people nationwide, it is an honor this Military Appreciation Month to thank those who serve and those who have served our country.
