Celebrating Ramadan

RSM provides an inclusive workplace for all of our 11,000+ employees nationwide and in Canada. And it’s in that spirit of inclusion that we regularly pause to recognize and celebrate the differences that make each of us unique. This month, we’re recognizing Ramadan, one of the holiest months of the year for our Muslim colleagues and others around the world.

In Ramadan, Muslims commemorate the revelation of the Qur’an, while fasting from food and drink during sunlit hours as a means of learning self-control, gratitude and compassion for those less fortunate. It’s also a time of self-reflection, devotion and spiritual rejuvenation, which is often marked with a focus on stewardship (which happens to be one of RSM’s core values), which is exercised through food drives and other fundraisers for charity.

Ramadan falls in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. In 2020, the month-long fast of Ramadan begins on April 23, and runs through May 23. It’s typically a highly social time as Muslims join one another for weekend dinners and for prayers at their mosques.

At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate one of their major holidays, Eid al-Fitr, or the “Festival of the Breaking of the Fast,” which will be held on May 23 this year. A special prayer and sermon are held the morning of Eid day, followed by a community celebration. Food, games and presents for children are important parts of the festivities, as friends and family spend the day socializing, eating and reuniting with old acquaintances.

Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, there’s no doubt that Ramadan will be recognized in unconventional ways this year. However, many of the traditional activities that accompany this special time of year will still take place – although, perhaps with much smaller groups and/or virtually. Nonetheless, the month will still be celebrated.

Please join us in recognizing this very special month of Ramadan!
