Disaster relief and Hurricane Florence

The IRS is providing help for victims of Hurricane Florence. Typically, the IRS will extend deadlines that apply to filing returns, paying taxes, and performing certain other time-sensitive acts for certain taxpayers affected by Hurricane Florence. The IRS is in the process of determining the Hurricane Florence disaster area.
For tax return preparers, guidance is also provided on the IRS website at, “Disaster Relief Resource Center for Tax Professionals.” The guidance states that disaster relief applies to tax preparers who are unable to file returns or make payments on behalf of the client because of the disaster. Taxpayers outside of the disaster area may qualify for relief if:
- their preparer is in the disaster area, and
- the preparer is unable to file or pay on their behalf.
In the past, the IRS has issued taxpayer relief for areas determined to be a disaster by the President. At this writing, the Hurricane Florence covered disaster area has not been determined.
