DC government issues notices concerning exemption expiration

Over the last few weeks, the District of Columbia government has been sending out letters to exempt organization titled:

NOTICE OF UPCOMING EXEMPTION EXPIRATION

The notice states that over the 2019 calendar year the District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) will begin to expire tax exemptions granted under District law.  The notice states that all exempt entities will be required to renew their exemptions or they will have their classifications changed to being taxable entities.  

All exempt organizations will need to log on to MyTax.DC.gov and provide all pertinent information and documents required. 

The required documents are as follows:

  1. Certificate or articles of incorporation
  2. Original determination letter
  3. An affirmation letter dated within the last five years

Exempt organization may request the affirmation letter from the IRS website.

If you have not yet received the notice mentioned above, we suggest that you log on to MyTax.DC.gov and review your organization’s status.
