Senior Living Health Care Connection: Payroll-based staffing reminder

Providers have until Monday, May 15, 2017, to submit staffing data for fiscal quarter Jan. 1 through March 31, 2017. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) officials advised providers to submit early to avoid delays due to errors or the need for corrections.

Staffing data has not been included in the five-star rating yet; this is expected to occur in 2018 for information submitted in 2017. However, the Nursing Home Compare website currently does have an indicator that shows whether or not the facility has successfully transmitted staffing data, including census data. A gray indicator on the Nursing Home Compare website means that the facility has not met the reporting requirements as of the last deadline, which for nursing facilities was Feb. 14, 2017.

Updates to Nursing Home Compare occur on the fourth Wednesday of every month. Many facilities have the gray indicator because the staffing or census data was transmitted but not accepted into the system prior to the deadline. The gray indicator will remain until the next submission deadline of Monday, May 15 has passed. If all the appropriate data has been submitted and accepted per the CMS submission payroll-based journal final validation report, then the gray indicator will change to green on the next Nursing Home Compare updates.
