Carlos has more than 25 years of experience in public accounting and financial management focused in the health care industry. He has served health care clients in many key sectors, including hospitals and health systems, physician practices, senior care, behavioral health, and urgent care centers. He started in public accounting as an auditor, eventually becoming an assurance partner of RSM in 2013.
Carlos has a deep understanding of the client point of view, having spent six years helping lead the finance department of a large Chicagoland hospital where he was responsible for financial operations and the revenue cycle. He is well-equipped to relate to clients who are going through the operational challenges found in health care such as being audited by Medicare, re-evaluating their revenue cycle, or undergoing a technology conversion due to his client-side experience. With his background, Carlos is able to bring the full power of being understood to client engagements. His ability to have critical conversations in order to identify key trigger points provides clients with a sense of confidence.
Carlos’ work converges at the center of his two passions: the health care industry’s mission to provide health and wellness to its community, and financial management to help clients with revenue growth. He is a skilled team builder and nothing makes him happier than when a colleague he has mentored achieves partner. Prior to his current role, Carlos was a health care-focused assurance partner and the regional lead of health care consulting and health care practice leader for the Southeast region.
A vocal advocate of diversity and inclusion, Carlos was born and raised in Miami to Cuban parents. He gained his Midwestern sensibility by attending MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill., where he played football and met his future wife. They spent 14 winters in the Midwest before moving back to Miami, where he is currently based. He is a lifetime member of the Association of Latino Professionals for American and proud national leader of !HOLA!, RSM’s employee network group for Hispanic and Latino professionals. He works closely with the firm’s diversity and inclusion leaders to enhance recruitment efforts and advance policies for Hispanics and Latinos throughout the firm. His goal is to provide a sense of belonging for all people at RSM.
