RSM celebrates Martin Luther King Day: From a dream to the Audacity of Hope

Today is Martin Luther King Day. To mark this significant day, the African American Community of Excellence (AACE) employee network group is proud to share this message.

On Aug. 28, 1963, some 250,000 supporters gathered in our nation’s capital to hear Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. deliver his thought-provoking, “I Have a Dream” speech. His words would go on to inspire one of the greatest movements in our nation’s history.

Dr. King’s speech was one of many delivered that day to raise awareness around the economic and political climate experienced by people of all cultures. His dream, inherited from his forbearers, was set in motion by President Lincoln’s pursuit of civil rights and equality for all Americans.

As he stood before the Lincoln Memorial, Dr. King captured the hearts of our nation and the emotions of his audience with the vibrant illustration of his dream. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Forty five years later, our nation watched the fulfillment of King’s dream as we elected our first African American president, Barack Obama, and as a nation embraced the “Audacity of Hope.” Dr. King’s dream has left an indelible mark in American history, transcending that aspirational goal forever inscribed by our forefathers “E pluribus unum – Out of many – One”.

This work continues to be carried out by RSM today through our Culture, Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) program and our continual pursuit of the firm’s values of respect, integrity, teamwork, excellence and stewardship.

And, much like Dr. King, at RSM, we understand the importance of embracing the unique characteristics of our team members, and know that developing ourselves and our colleagues helps us build a brand that will transcend time.
