January jobs report; Fed speakers take center stage this week
WEEKLY MARKET COMMENTARY |
This week features arguably the most important five days of economic releases of the New Year. In addition to the January U.S. employment report, there will be fresh information on conditions in the manufacturing and service sector, construction activity, trade, and personal income and spending.
Also, the Federal Reserve will send out five different speakers who will address the economy and monetary policy, probably expanding on topics the central bank discussed in last week's two-day policy session, not the least of which is the timetable for interest rate increases and policy normalization. We believe the most notable Fed speaker will be Atlanta Federal Reserve President Dennis Lockhart, a Federal Open Market Committee voter, on Friday, Feb. 6.
