Deltek Costpoint functionality keeps costs low for government contractor

HMS TECHNOLOGIES, Inc. (HMS) is an advanced IT systems integrator offering project management outsourcing, software development and system design services to government entities. Headquartered in Martinsburg, W. Va., the corporation opened its doors in 2003 and eight years later has grown its business to $30 million in revenues.

Background
From its humble beginnings, HMS started the company using Sage Peachtree accounting software while managing their projects in Microsoft Excel. They were performing a lot of manual work, re-keying data from Peachtree into Excel. Now, with an accounting staff of four and $30 million in revenue, they were ready for a more sophisticated system that did not require additional resources to support it.

Project
RSM implemented the Costpoint solution and the Deltek Time and Expense add-on. These applications provide a completely integrated solution with the functionality for project management, human resources, financial reporting and accounting, and timekeeping, with validations and approvals for labor processing.

HMS purchased Deltek's Costpoint ERP with core modules including General Ledger and Financial Reporting by business segment, Cash Management, Project Management and Billing by profit center, with detailed revenue recognition and reporting. In addition, HMS implemented the Costpoint Payroll module that fully integrates with Deltek Time and Expense, eliminating the need for additional effort to complete the payroll process.

Because HMS did not want to complicate their system with a lot of customization, we uniquely configured the system to leverage the core functionality to meet their needs. To accomplish this, we used our consultative approach and detailed understanding of the Deltek product to deliver a solution based on creative use of the application. Unit-based revenue and projects with multiple customers were two needs addressed through this approach. Our implementation approach provided effective cost control and avoided the purchase of any module that would have limited, or minimal, utility.
